Can you share the story behind the Mobile Creative Capsule — what inspired its creation, and what gap did you hope to fill in Cyprus’ cultural landscape? What milestones have you achieved so far (e.g., pilots, product development, partnerships, funding, industry recognition, market expansion)?
The idea for the Mobile Creative Capsules emerged from our own lived experience as young artists in Cyprus, facing daily challenges and limited opportunities for creative expression. Working within Urban Gorillas, an activist NGO of architects and researchers engaging with social and environmental issues, we were encouraged to explore new ways of supporting the cultural ecosystem.
Cyprus, much like the wider European context, faces a continuous outflow of young creatives seeking better career prospects abroad. With the Mobile Creative Capsules, our aim is to offer an affordable, flexible, and inspiring platform where emerging artists or any other creatives can showcase their work, collaborate, and reach broader audiences. At the same time, the Capsules reclaim and reactivate underused public spaces, making art accessible to everyone and reinforcing the role of culture in everyday urban life.
So far, we have developed the conceptual framework and initial prototypes, and begun building partnerships with local cultural actors and municipalities.
How does the capsule function in practice — could you walk us through its design, materials, and the types of artistic activities it can host?

The Mobile Creative Capsules are designed as lightweight, wheel-based structures that can be easily moved and transported to different locations across the city. Their design emerged through a 10-day collaborative workshop with students from the University of Nicosia, supported by the Cyprus Architects Association. This participatory process brought together multiple stakeholders, allowing diverse perspectives and experiences to shape the final form of the capsules.
Each capsule functions as a modular and adaptable infrastructure, capable of transforming to support a wide range of artistic scenarios. The materiality prioritizes sustainability: the main metal structure is constructed from leftover pieces donated by a factory in Cyprus, while the polycarbonate elements also incorporate reclaimed offcuts sourced from a local manufacturer, materials that would otherwise remain unused. The capsules are powered by a portable, solar-charged battery, reinforcing an environmentally conscious approach.
The design integrates ‘playful’ architectural elements, including movable urban furniture and perforated walls. These perforations not only offer multiple possibilities for exhibiting artworks but also provide shading during the day.
The capsules can operate either independently or interconnect to form a larger, unified platform. This flexibility allows them to host activities of different scales, from small workshops and exhibitions to performances, screenings, and collaborative cultural events.
You were among the winners of the Ignite NEB Hackathon, earning the opportunity to advance to NEB Grow and receive funding to turn your idea into a prototype. What motivated you to join the hackathon, and how has this experience influenced your journey so far?
Joining the NEB Hackathon was an opportunity to take a locally rooted concept. One that responds to the needs of young creatives in Cyprus and place it within a broader European dialogue. Through this funding, we were able to test our idea, observe its outcomes, and further develop it in alignment with the values of sustainability, creativity, and social cohesion that guide our work at Urban Gorillas. Our aim was to challenge our assumptions, receive expert feedback, and understand whether the Mobile Creative Capsules could have relevance and impact beyond our immediate context.
Building a prototype and testing it in real environments opened opportunities for dialogue with public authorities, including municipalities, as well as with public and creative organisations interested in activating space and supporting local artists. This process expanded our network and strengthened our confidence to share the project more widely through our webpage, where anyone across Europe can explore and adopt Mobile Capsules: https://mobilecreativecapsule.com/
Your approach emphasizes collaboration and stakeholder engagement — from involving young artists in the design process to testing the capsule with the public at events like the “Pame Kaimakli” festival. How have these interactions shaped the project so far, and what feedback or insights have you gained from participants and audiences?
Collaboration and stakeholder engagement have been central to the development of the Mobile Creative Capsules. Involving young artists, students, and community members from the early stages allowed us to shape a design that truly reflects the needs and realities of those who will eventually use it.
Testing the capsule during public events, such as the Pame Kaimakli Festival, provided invaluable real-world insights. There, the capsule hosted its first creative event by People of Cyprus, featuring an interactive exhibition and screening of kitchen stories from people living across the island. Participants engaged with the structure in spontaneous and unexpected ways, by using it as a play stage, an exhibition surface, and a point of curiosity. These interactions helped us gather feedback and understand both the strengths and the limitations of the design. Visitors and creatives showed strong interest in the capsules, offering numerous suggestions for future uses. Through these encounters, the capsules demonstrated their potential to act as catalysts for community engagement and urban activation.
Sustainability is a strong component of MCC, particularly through the use of repurposed materials and collaborations with industries that produce waste. Why was this approach important for your team, and how do you ensure that the capsule remains both eco-friendly and durable?
By using repurposed materials, such as polycarbonate offcuts and leftover metal pieces from local industries, we reduced waste, formed partnerships with factories, and kept the capsules affordable for young artists. Durability is ensured through the careful selection of high-quality discarded materials, combined with a lightweight wooden structure designed for mobility and ease of repair. The portable solar-charged battery further supports energy autonomy. Together, these choices make MC² both eco-friendly and resilient, embodying sustainability in practice.
What impact do you envision MCC having on emerging artists and local communities in the long term — both culturally and economically?
In the long term, we envision MC² becoming a catalyst for cultural activation and new financial opportunities for emerging artists and local communities. For young creatives in Cyprus, access to affordable infrastructure is one of the biggest barriers to developing and showcasing their work. The Mobile Creative Capsules provide a flexible, low-cost platform that enables artists to experiment, collaborate, and reach wider audiences without the limitations of traditional venues.
For local communities, the Capsules can bring cultural activity directly into neighbourhoods and rural spaces that have limited access to artistic spaces. By activating underused public areas, they encourage social interaction, strengthen community identity, and foster a sense of ownership over shared urban environments. Economically, these micro-events have the potential to attract visitors, and stimulate small-scale creative economies within the neighbourhood.
Looking ahead, what’s next for the Mobile Creative Capsule? Are there any upcoming pilot events, collaborations, or expansion plans on the horizon?
Looking ahead, our priority is to further test and refine the Mobile Creative Capsule through real-life pilot events and new collaborations. We are currently planning a series of pop-up activations in public spaces across Cyprus, where the prototype will host workshops, performances, and exhibitions in collaboration with emerging artists and local schools. We are also exploring partnerships with municipalities and cultural organisations interested in adopting the Capsule as a tool for neighbourhood activation.
The New European Bauhaus champions sustainability, inclusion, and beauty in creating better living spaces. How do the principles and values of the NEB align with the vision and development of the Mobile Creative Capsule?

The values of the New European Bauhaus are deeply embedded in the vision and development of the Mobile Creative Capsule. Sustainability is reflected in our material choices and building process: the Capsule is constructed using leftover materials, responsibly sourced wood, and a portable solar-powered battery, demonstrating that creative infrastructure can be both environmentally responsible and functional. This aligns with the NEB’s call for circularity and resource-conscious design.
Inclusion is central. The Capsule addresses the lack of accessible cultural infrastructure for young artists in Cyprus by providing an affordable, mobile platform that can be placed directly within neighbourhoods. By activating public spaces and inviting communities to participate, it enables artistic expression beyond traditional institutions and reaches audiences who may not normally engage with cultural activities.
Finally, beauty as interpreted by the NEB through creativity, quality of experience, and connection to place, guides the capsule’s playful and modular design. It transforms everyday urban spaces into inviting, imaginative environments.
Together, these principles shape MC² as a practical and symbolic tool for more sustainable, inclusive, and inspiring urban cultural life.
